# Jared Watson

Software engineer building AI systems.

I’m on the AI team at [Smart](https://getsmart.app), where I build data ingestion pipelines, the routing behind its AI chat, and the graph retrieval and APIs that serve it. On the side I’m building [OneStar](/projects.md#onestar), which tracks and compares audience sentiment for apps and games across app stores, and [Pyx](https://pyx.finance), a local-first portfolio tracker that is free to download. Before that I founded [Cure AI](/projects.md#cure-ai), a scientific research platform with access to 26 million pieces of peer-reviewed literature, built on a patented retrieval method.

## Currently building

### OneStar (live)
Audience sentiment for apps and games, compared and tracked.
OneStar reads the reviews for any app or game across the App Store, Google Play, and Steam and turns them into a clear picture of how people feel: what they love, why they leave, and how that changes from one platform or competitor to the next. Track a report and it keeps up on its own as new reviews arrive.
- Every store, side by side. Each report merges an app’s store listings, splits any number by platform, and sets up to four products next to each other.
- Tracks itself. Tracked reports refresh daily, weekly, or monthly, read only the new reviews, and send an alert when sentiment shifts.
- Built on Jev. Jev is TypeSafe’s model for judgments. Where a chat model writes paragraphs, Jev returns a typed answer with its probability, which code can count directly.

### Pyx (in beta)
A local-first portfolio tracker.
Pyx is a desktop app for people who manage their own investments. Every account lands in one encrypted file on your own machine, with charts, research, notes, and honest returns built on top. There is no Pyx cloud and no login, and it is free to use until you want brokerage sync.
- Local first. Holdings, transactions, and history live in one encrypted SQLite file, with the key in your system keychain.
- Native and fast. Written in Rust with a GPU-rendered interface, and cold start is held under 750 ms in CI.
- Bring your own AI. Pyx ships an MCP server rather than a chatbot, so Claude, Codex, or a local model can work from the same data.

## Selected work

- [Cure AI](/projects.md#cure-ai) 2024. A scientific research platform with access to 26 million pieces of peer-reviewed literature, with every source cited.
- [U.S. Wildfire Analysis](/projects.md#us-wildfire-analysis) 2024. 1.88 million wildfire records: where large fires cluster and how long they burn.
- [DooleyAFavor](/projects.md#dooleyafavor) 2023. A task marketplace where Emory students post jobs and hire each other.
- [All 7 projects](/projects.md)

## Writing

- 2026-09-17 [Nine hosts: everything Pyx connects to, and how to check for yourself](https://www.pyx.finance/blog/nine-hosts). Every internet address the Pyx desktop app can reach, what each request carries, what it never carries, and how to check it yourself.

## About

I build AI systems that hold up in production and make sense to the people using them.

- Education: Computer Science, Emory University, 2025
- Hometown: Tampa, Florida
- Startup: Cure AI, junior year
- Patent: [US 11,971,914](https://patents.justia.com/patent/11971914), AI query processing
- Now: AI Engineer, [Smart](https://getsmart.app)
- Building: OneStar and Pyx

I grew up in Tampa, Florida, and started programming in high school. Python was my first language, and it led me to study computer science at Emory University in Atlanta, where I graduated in 2025.

At Emory I kept building things outside of class. In my junior year that work became my first startup, Cure AI, a scientific research platform with access to 26 million pieces of peer-reviewed literature, where every answer comes with full citations. The retrieval method behind it was later granted a patent.

Today I’m on the AI team at Smart, a health data platform for patients, providers, and athletes. I build the pipelines that bring sports stats, injury histories, and medical research into its knowledge graph, and I work on the routing and retrieval behind its AI chat. In my free time I’m building OneStar, which helps teams understand and compare how their audience feels across app stores, and Pyx, a local-first portfolio tracker.

## Experience

Two internships, a startup, and a full-time AI engineering role.

- Jun 2025 to present. [Smart](https://getsmart.app), AI Engineer. Part of the AI team at a health data platform for patients, providers, and athletes. Build the pipelines that bring sports stats, injury histories, and medical research into Smart’s knowledge graph and vector store, with quality checks that gate what reaches production. Also develop the routing that decides how each AI chat message is answered, ICD-10 classification grounded in graph search, and a read-only API over the injury data.
- 2023 to 2024. Cure AI, Founder. Founded during junior year at Emory: a scientific research platform with access to 26 million pieces of peer-reviewed literature. Designed and built the retrieval system and product, launched on Product Hunt as Product of the Day, and secured a patent for the query-processing method.
- Jun 2023 to Aug 2023. AMNI, Software Engineer Intern. Built a full stack AI chatbot platform on the OpenAI API and a vector database that lets users ask questions about large sets of regulatory documents and get answers grounded in the source text.
- May 2022 to Aug 2022. Synapse Florida, Technology Intern. Built a statewide WordPress calendar that automatically gathers and publishes technology events across Florida, integrated Typeform and HubSpot CRM, and handled data parsing with pandas.
